Morinville’s Municipal Sustainability Plan

Morinville 2035: Growing Together, Morinville’s Municipal Sustainability Plan, was adopted by Morinville Council on March 8, 2011.

Sustainable development (or sustainability) has significant implications as to how we live our lives and make decisions as individuals, businesses and communities. Its most common and widely accepted definition is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”, as coined by the United Nations Brundtland Commission in 1987.

In October 2010, an Environmental Scan Report was completed. The purpose of the Environmental Scan was to provide a background document that provides definitions, context, and information about current sustainability trends and issues relevant to municipal sustainability planning from a global, national and regional context. A current state description for Morinville is also included in this report.

Informed by the Environmental Scan and iterative public consultations that took place between 2009 and 2011, Morinville 2035 Growing Together was developed to establish a 25-year vision for the community. Citizen input was vital to its development and will continue to be critical as the Municipal Sustainability Plan is implemented.

To support the ongoing alignment, implementation and reporting of progress for the Municipal Sustainability Plan, a strategic planning framework was developed and adopted with the 2011 - 2013 Strategic Plan on April 12, 2011. The 2013 Business Plan was adopted on December 11, 2012. Furthermore, Council adopted a 2015-17 Strategic Plan May 12, 2015.
